Usually when one thinks about the World Cup, summer
is usually associated with it, however this might not be the case in the
Fédération Internationale de Football Association's or FIFA's
twenty-second tournament which occurs every four years. There are two
paths FIFA may take the first is to keep the normal schedule which would be
from June 1st to July 1st and the second alternative would be to bump the World
Cup a few months back to the winter season. The 2022 World Cup is to be hosted
for the first time in the Middle Eastern region in the small country of Qatar.
The reason they want to bump the World Cup back to winter is due to the fact
that Qatari summers are extremely hot with temperatures reaching 50 °C
(122 °F). One of the plans to deal with the extreme heat is to incorporate
state of the art stadium cooling technology which will make it
possible to cool the stadium by up to 20 °C (68°F)
according to Qatar 2022 Officials Website. Not only is this new technique
going to be implemented on stadiums but also on fan zones, training
pitches, metro stations and walkways. The alternative presented to FIFA
was to bump the World Cup to the winter in which all of this expensive state of
the art technology would not be necessary. Current FIFA president Joseph or
Sepp Blatter is urging the executive committee to switch the World Cup to
winter because of the fact that the World Cup is a Mecca for soccer hooligans
ranging from all likes of life because as Sepp says "you can cool down the stadiums, but you can't cool
down the whole country and you can't simply cool down the ambience of a World
Cup." The Barclay's Premier League in England is strongly
opposed of having the World Cup during the winter because it will interfere
with their season play which is very narcissistic of them because if they
haven't realized it most of leagues in South America play the World Cup halfway
through their season and still fair very well (Uruguay 4th place finish 2010 South Africa World Cup). Although the dates for the 2022 World Cup yet are still not known it is safe to say that it will be during November/December so that it wouldn't interfere with the 2022 Winter Olympics which's host city is still to be determined. There will be a meeting held October 3-4 at FIFA headquarters in Switzerland to approve the change to winter but regardless of this Qatar 2022 will be the most expensive World Cup to date. The estimated cost right now is at $220 billion dollars which is sixty times more than the $3.5 billion dollars spent on South Africa. Part of the reason Qatar is going to be so expensive is that a whole new city is to be created called Lusail which is where the opening match and the final will take place. There are still many problems which have to be sorted out before the 2022 World Cup but FIFA should seriously focus on getting Brazil all done. Hosting a World Cup is not always easy as demonstrated to us by Brazilian protests during the 2013 Confederations Cup. The 2018 World Cup is also looking to be a very controversial topic because of the laws dealing with homosexuality but who ever said the most powerful organization in the world wasn't corrupt and controversial.

That is some impressive stadium advertising. I'll bet they pull it off...
